    Filing Receipt

    Definition:
    When an application is submitted via e-TEAS, the Office immediately issues a confirmation of filing via e-mail that includes the serial number and filing date, and a summary of all the data provided by applicant in the application.

    Combination Patent

    Definition:
    A patent granted for an invention that unites existing components in a novel way.

    Patent Cooperation Treaty

    Definition:
    Provides a mechanism by which an applicant can file a single application that, when certain requirements have been fulfilled, is equivalent to a regular national filing in each designated Contracting State. There are currently over 112 PCT Contracting States.

    Patent Pending

    Definition:
    A phrase that often appears on manufactured items. It means that someone has applied for a patent on an invention that is contained in the manufactured item.
